London 2012 Summer Olympic Games


The 2012 Summer Olympic Games (XXX Olympiad) will be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012. London has hosted the Olympic Games on 2 past occasions, in 1908 and 1948, with a third scheduled for 2012. London (UK) is the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times. Four cities have hosted two Summer Olympic Games: Los Angeles, London, Paris and Athens. Australia, France, Germany and Greece have all hosted the Summer Olympic Games twice. the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio de Janeiro will host the first Summer Games in South America.

 Mascots

Wenlock and Mandeville are the official mascots for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics being held in London, United Kingdom, this marks the 2nd time (after Vancouver's Miga, Quatchi, Sumi & Mukmuk) that both Olympic and Paralympic mascots were unveiled at the same time.

Torch relay

The 2012 Summer Olympics torch relay is in progress, running from 19 May – 27 July 2012, prior to the 2012 Summer Olympics. The torch bearer selection process was announced on 18 May, 2011. The Olympic Torch arrived on flight BA2012 on 18 May 2012 from Greece. The relay will last 70 days, with 66 evening celebrations, six island visits with about 8,000 people carrying the torch a distance of about 8,000 miles (12,800 km), starting from Land's End in Cornwall.

The Olympic Park

The main centre for lots of the activities, such as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and many of the sporting events, will be the Olympic Park. The Olympic Park will contain the main Stadium, Aquatics Centre, and smaller stadia like the Hockey Centre and the Velopark for Cycling. The Athletes Village, where the athletes will stay during the Games, will also be in the Park.

The Opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics will be called 'The Isles of Wonder’. Danny Boyle (Oscar-winner) will be the artistic director for the opening ceremony.

The 2012 Summer Olympic programme features 26 sports and a total of 39 disciplines. For the first time, women's boxing is included in the programme, with 40 athletes competing in five different weight classes.

2012 Summer Paralympic Games

The 2012 Summer Paralympic Games will be the 15th Paralympics and will take place between 29 August and 9 September 2012. The Games will be held in London, United Kingdom. The 2012 Paralympic Games programme has 20 sports and 21 disciplines.

Scale of the 2012 Games:

- Nations participating 184 (qualified), 204 (estimated)
- 26 Olympic sports in 34 venues
- 20 Paralympic sports in 21 venues
- 10,500 Olympic athletes and 4,200 Paralympic athletes
- 20,000 press and media

Athletics

In athletics a total of 12 Indian Athletes get qualified for Olympics 2012.

Men’s discus throw - Vikas Gowda

Women’s discus throw - Krishna Poonia (Commonwealth Games gold medallist) and Seema Antil

Men's triple jump - Renjith Maheshwary

Women's triple jump – Mayookha Johny

Men's marathon – Ram Singh Yadav

Men's 20 km race walk – Gurmeet Singh, Baljinder Singh, Irfan Kolothum Thodi

Boxing

In boxing a total of 8 Indian Boxers get qualified for Olympics 2012.

Men's light flyweight (49 kg) – Devendro Singh

Men's bantamweight (56 kg) – Shiva Thapa

Men's lightweight (60 kg) – Jai Bhagwan

Men's light welterweight (64 kg) – Manoj Kumar (Commonwealth Games gold medallist)

Men's welterweight (69 kg) – Vikas Krishan Yadav (Asian Games - 2010 gold medallist)

Men's middleweight (75 kg) – Vijender Singh (2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medallist)

Men's light heavyweight (81 kg) – Sumit Sangwan

Women's flyweight (51 kg) – Mary Kom (5 times World Boxing Champion, She is the first Indian female boxer who has qualified for the Olympic Games.)

Badminton

In badminton 5 Indian players get qualified for Olympics 2012.

Ronjan Singh Sodhi (Asian Games-Gold, Commonwealth games-2010- Silver Medal) - Men’s double trap

Geeta Kumari Phogat (55 kg) - Women's freestyle (first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the Olympics)

Judo- Only Garima Chaudhary qualified for Olympics 2012 in women’s 63 kg event.

Rowing - Manjeet Singh, Swaran Singh and Sandeep Kumar - 3 Indian Rowers get qualified for Olympics 2012.

Swimming

4 Indian swimmers get qualified for Olympics 2012 - Aaron D’Souza, Sandeep Sejwal, Saurabh Sangvekar, Virdhawal Khade.

Table tennis - Soumyajit Ghosh (men’s) and Ankita Das (women’s category).

Field Hockey -After failing to qualify for the Beijing Olympics 2008 Indian Hockey team, qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics after winning a qualifying tournament against France.

Weightlifting - Katulu Ravi Kumar (Men's 69 kg) and Ngangbam Soniya Chanu (Women's 48 kg) 2 Indian weightlifters get qualified for Olympics 2012.


Still more qualifying tournaments in various games are left and still at least 10-15 Indian players can qualify for the London Olympics.
